When I first travelled to Japan in 2008, my expectations of Tokyo, like many other people was of neon drenched streets, futuristic technologies, commuters tightly packed on subways and the ubiquitous Cosplay kids in the fashion area of Harajuku. Today when mentioning Japan the main talking point has shifted understandably to earthquakes and the effects of the nuclear pollution brought on by the Tsunami of 2011.
The one thing the earthquake didn’t affect was the resilience and attitude of Japanese people to get on with everyday life, which is an amazing and surreal thing to witness. This is not surprising as Japan and its people have had a long history of dealing with disasters, the most notable is the great Kanto earthquake in 1923,that flattened half of Edo Tokyo.
