ew York-based Japanese artist Mariko Mori returns to London’s art scene after 14 years with her insightful exhibition of LED sculptures, large scale installations, sound works and photographs.
Titled ‘Rebirth’, it also includes some of Mori’s most acclaimed work from the past 11 years. The cycle of life, death and rebirth is the underlying theme of the show, which Mori has timed to coincide with the winter solstice in 2012 (ancient civilizations believed that the 2012 solstice will either mark the end of the world or the birth of a new era).
Mori’s works are rooted in both traditional and contemporary Japanese culture, sprinkled with Eastern and Western influences. She effortlessly manages to combine the principles of Shintoism and Buddhism with science and technology.
She expresses traditional cultural beliefs through emerging technologies and digital media, which she sees as tools to be harnessed in order for us to reconnect with our environment. Her works are indeed more perceptive than meets the eye.
