The Kathmandu International Art Festival – known to the arterattis simply as ‘Artmandu’ – is the largest international art event in Nepal. Each edition of the festival has a particular theme – this year it’s art for a social cause. Artists from 31 countries explore issues such as ecological systems, urbanization, water conservation, natural resources and biodiversity through their works, which range from paintings to documentaries to photography and mixed media.
akistani artist and illustrator Adeel Uz Zafar gets his inspiration from living in the Northern areas of Pakistan. Bangladesh-based Imran Hossain Piplu merges the visual and the conceptual into thought-provoking mixed-media pieces. Promotesh Das Pulak, also from Bangladesh, questions war and environmental degradation through his experiments in different mediums. Tibetan artist Nortse (Norbu Tsering) focuses on global warming, overpopulation and the erosion of culture and tradition. Lantian Xie was born in China and raised in the United Arab Emirates – his images are a reflection of his two identities. Kazakhistan’s Erbossyn Meldibekov refers to himself as a political artist; his works comment on the process of change and reform in Central Asia.
