On first arriving, Hong Kong can easily overwhelm the visitor. It’s a heaving mass of tightly packed skyscrapers and garish neon lights, where life goes on at a breathless pace. This former British protectorate is a real feast for the eyes and, especially within the confines of chaotic inner city Tsim Sha Tsui and Kowloon, you get a sensory overload of contradictions. At every turn there are steaming hole-in-the-wall canteens serving up street food that will truly take you out of your culinary comfort zone, alongside glitzy hi-tech malls, and crumbling tenement blocks. Come rush hour, bicycle rickshaws and historic trams compete with the world’s most efficient metro system.
