Brighton’s Royal Pavilion is perhaps the most romantic of English buildings, but it doesn’t look very English. It is the only building in Europe which combines a mock-Chinese interior with Mughal inspired architecture. Yet, for all its oriental splendour, this palace tells us very little about authentic oriental art, since not a single person involved it its creation had actually visited Asia. It does, however, tell us a lot about the appeal that the Orient held for Europeans in a time before travelling to the far corners of the world became more commonplace.
